The director hints that the third installment will be the last in her ‘Wonder Woman’ film series and she already has the story mapped.
While fans’ excitement for a “Wonder Woman” movie is still high following the success of the first installment in 2017, Patty Jenkins seemingly has no intention to prolong the character’s journey. The filmmaker, who returns to serve behind the lens for the sequel, hints that the next third installment would be the last of the Warner Bros. film franchise.
Speaking to Vanity Fair, Jenkins says that she already knows how she wants Diana Prince’s story to end. “I have pretty clear plans for ‘Wonder Woman 3’,” the director says. “Whether I [direct] it or not, I see how her arc should end in my incarnation of Wonder Woman. I have great passion for that.”
As for her future projects post-“Wonder Woman”, Jenkins shares, “I think people are realizing there’s money to be made with these other stories that they may not totally understand, and that is incredible. I feel like, ‘Oh, my God, there’s so many stories that I want to tell. Maybe I can actually get them made now.’ ”
It’s unclear if Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment had a trilogy in mind when they first started developing the Wonder Woman movie. In most cases, studios want to retain and extend a successful franchise and so far “Wonder Woman” is still one of Warner Bros. and DC’s hit superhero movies, besides 2018’s “Aquaman”.
“Wonder Woman” sequel, “Wonder Woman 1984”, has been filmed with Gal Gadot reprising her role as the princess of the Amazons. Chris Pine also returns despite his character’s apparent demise in the first movie, with Kristen Wiig being cast as its main villain, Cheetah. The movie has been pushed back from its original 2019 release date to June 5, 2020 to give it a coveted summer slot.
