Kanye West and Pusha T recently angered a large chunk of the social media community by using a photo of the late Whitney Houston‘s drug-ridden bathroom as the cover art for the latter’s album, Daytona.
While the brunt of the criticism has come from fans of the passed megastar, her family has now broken their silence on the distasteful decision made by the two rappers.
G.O.O.D. Music’s head honcho Pusha T revealed earlier this week, prior to the release of the album, that ‘Ye paid a staggering $85,000 to license the 2006 image, which showed drug paraphernalia and alcohol bottles scattered across the bathroom counter of Houston’s Atlanta home.
The rapper claimed that Kanye decided to change his album cover to the controversial image at the 11th hour and it is understandable that the decision massively enraged the Houston family.
“Nobody in their right mind would do this, and to promote an album?” Houston’s first cousin, Damon Elliott, told Bossip. “Is this what the music business has come to?”
Elliott went on to add that Pusha and ‘Ye’s disgusting and insensitive decision has forced their family to relive the traumatic event and only proves that they are exploiting the tragedy for their own personal gain.
“I can’t describe how disgusted I am,” he added.
Elliott, who is Dionne Warwick‘s son, said his family was completely caught off guard by West’s decision to use the photo. In fact, he said his young daughter is the one who made him aware that they were using it.
“He doesn’t realize what he’s doing to the babies — to the family — that’s the only reason I got really upset,” he said.
Elliott, who as worked with West in the past and even helped him land one of his first feature spots on Keyshia Cole’s album, questioned the rapper’s mental health in the process, as this is likely not something the average person would deem to be acceptable to do, so easily.
“I think Kanye needs to get checked in somewhere,” he said. “Addiction and mental illness are real, and you’re witnessing it at the highest point. And I’m not here to bash him, I’m just speaking truth. I can’t imagine that he would just do this for the publicity… It’s sick!”
