Though she has gained support from a number of stars, the ‘If Beale Street Could Talk’ actress admits she was initially discouraged by some from including the challenge in her Golden Globes speech.
Tyler Perry was among the first stars to reach out to actress Regina King and show his support for her Golden Globes call to employ an equal split of men and women onset.
The “If Beale Street Could Talk” star revealed she would only be producing projects which really champion equal rights for the next two years as she accepted her Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture on Sunday, January 6, when she challenged fellow power players in “all industries” to do the same.
“I am making a vow, and it’s going to be tough, to make sure that everything that I produce that is 50 per cent women,” she said.
Regina’s big declaration earned her a loud round of applause from her Hollywood peers at the ceremony, and as soon as she stepped off stage, she began receiving similar pledges from stars like filmmaker Perry and “True Blue” writer/producer Bert Salke.
“Bert Salke has (reached out), Tyler Perry, immediately, and those are men,” Regina told U.S. news show Entertainment Tonight.
“Those are just a couple of the men. I haven’t even finished going through all my congratulations emails, so I’m sure there’s a couple of others.”
But Regina reveals some people actually tried to talk her out of delivering such a bold speech at the awards: “(People have told me) that to take the risk of saying something like that and putting something on myself (like) that was too big,” she explained.
“I don’t feel like it is. I feel like it’s possible, and the reality is all I had to do was say it.”
The actress admits she received similar unsolicited advice when she decided she wanted to expand her career and try directing.
“All I had to do was start saying it out loud, and the amount of support I got and people that helped find workshops and programmes for me to go through to hone those directing skills, it happened as soon as I said it,” Regina shared.
She made her directorial debut back in 2013 on the set of her crime drama series “Southland”, and went on to shoot episodes of “Scandal”, “Being Mary Jane”, and “The Good Doctor”, among others.
