Actor Mahershala Ali is returning to his music roots for a secret film-related side project.
The “Moonlight” star previously embarked on a shortlived career as a rapper, rhyming under the stage name Prince Ali, before focusing his efforts on breaking into Hollywood.
Mahershala was given a blast from the past during an interview on breakfast show “Good Morning America” on Thursday, November 15 as footage from one of his old music videos aired, prompting the 44 year old to laugh about his former hip-hop endeavour, insisting he is “very retired” as a rapper.
However, the Oscar winner reveals he hasn’t completely quit the recording studio, as he’s been quietly using his spare time to prepare new music for an as-yet-undisclosed movie.
“I’ve been working on something for a project, associated specifically with the film,” he explained. “So in terms of like, pursuing a career in doing it and releasing music on a regular basis, no (I’m not doing that anymore), but for my work as an actor, I’m working on something. I have been working on it for a while, two years.”
Mahershala stopped short of offering up further details about the project, but he currently has two films in post-production: James Cameron and Robert Rodriguez’s “Alita: Battle Angel”, and the animated “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse”.
The star, who will also lead the cast in the upcoming third season of hit crime series “True Detective”, previously released one album while he was signed to the California-based label Hieroglyphics Imperium in the late 2000s – Curb Side Service dropped in 2007.
