Author George R.R. Martin reveals that the prequel pilot is actually set 5,000 years before the events on the mega popular series.

AceShowbiz –
Expect a completely different world on the upcoming “Game of Thrones” prequel TV series on HBO. It was previously reported that the project, tentatively titled “The Long Night”, will be set 10,000 years before the events in the mothership series. But apparently it doesn’t take place that far away back before “GoT”.

Talking to Entertainment Weekly, author George R.R. Martin sets the record straight. Martin reveals that the prequel is actually set 5,000 years before the events on “Game of Thrones”. “….it’s closer to 5,000 years,” he explains.

However, it doesn’t change the fact that many will be different on the prequel as it’s still long enough ago to predate Valyria. The doomed city in Essos where House Targaryen raises their dragons has yet to exist.

“Westeros is a very different place,” Martin, who will serve as executive producer and co-creator of the new pilot series, explains. “There’s no King’s Landing. There’s no Iron Throne. There are no Targaryens — Valyria has hardly begun to rise yet with its dragons and the great empire that it built. We’re dealing with a different and older world and hopefully that will be part of the fun of the series.”

Dragons came around about after The Long Night, according to Westeros.org. “While Westeros was recovering from The Long Night, in Essos, the peaceful sheep-herding folk of the Valyrian peninsula find dragons lairing in the Fourteen Flames, an immense chain of volcanoes extending across the neck of the peninsula. The Valyrians tame the dragons with magic, which gives them the means to gain influence over the area. The Valyrian Freehold is established.” it states.

Starring Naomi Watts, the prequel pilot “chronicles the world’s descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour. And only one thing is for sure: From the horrifying secrets of Westeros’ history to the true origin of the white walkers, the mysteries of the East, to the Starks of legend… it’s not the story we think we know.”

Previous report suggested the project was looking to add Sheila Atim and Denise Gough to the cast. Writer Jane Goldman and casting director Lucinda Syson allegedly are trying to get Sheila Atim and Denise Gough onboard for the highly-anticipated prequel series. The Hashtag Show reports that both of them haven’t been “officially joined the series” as the negotiations are currently underway.

Their characters remain to be seen, while Watts is set to play a lead character which is described as a “charismatic socialite hiding a dark secret.”

The upcoming project is set to start its production in February.
