The ‘Beguiled’ actress plays a young small-town girl who is pitted against the country’s ‘best singers’ in an ‘American Idol’-like competition.
Fred Berger, the producer behind “La La Land”, is teaming up with Brian Kavanaugh-Jones to bring another musical drama film. Titled “Teen Spirit (2019)”, it centers its story on a young girl, played by Elle Fanning, who enters a singing competition a la “American Idol”.
The first trailer for the movie has been released, giving a look at Violet’s (Fanning) life as a horse-riding loner from a small town on the Isle of Wight. She is seen moving bales of hay, walking alongside a horse and working at a restaurant.
Her life changes after she sees an ad for a singing competition that pits her against some of the best singers in the country. Zlatko Buric plays Vlad, Violet’s mentor who teaches her to sing from the heart. She is taking the stage to belt out a cover of Robyn’s 2010 hit “Dancing On My Own”.
Another scene hints that Violet will survive the competition until the latter part of it. As she turns into a pop star, Rebecca Hall’s character offers her some advice, “Life comes down to these moments, Violet, don’t take them for granted.”
According to the synopsis, Violet is a shy teenager who dreams of escaping her small town and pursuing her passion to sing. With the help of an unlikely mentor, she enters a local singing competition that will test her integrity, talent and ambition. The movie is dubbed a visceral and stylish spin on the Cinderella story driven by a pop-fueled soundtrack.
The movie will feature Fanning performing music by Ellie Goulding, Tegan and Sara, Annie Lennox, Orbital, Sigrid, Carly Rae Jepsen and Jack Antonoff. Rae Jepsen and Antonoff wrote an original tune called “Wildflowers” for the movie. The trailer also promises music by Ariana Grande, Katy Perry, Grimes, The Undertones, Aqua, Alice Deejay, Whitfield, Major Lazer and No Doubt.
Max Minghella serves behind the lens, marking his feature film directorial debut. Minghella also writes the script. The movie, which also stars Agnieszka Grochowska, Millie Brady and Olivia Gray among others, is set to be released on April 5, 2019 in the U.S. It had its world premiere at the 2018 Toronto International Film Festival where it received generally positive reviews.
