The Epix series has been in the development hell since 2016 before the network finally handed it a 10-episode, straight-to-series order.
Fans are finally getting new updates about “Pennyworth“. Epix’s long-agitating Batman prequel TV series is reportedly to begin its production later this year.
According to Omega Underground, the first episode of the project will most likely to be filmed this fall or winter in the U.K.
Following the announcement that “Gotham” will be ending its run with its forthcoming season 5, showrunner Bruno Heller announced last month that he would be producing the upcoming series, which centers on young Alfred Pennyworth. The series has in been the development hell since 2016 before Epix finally handed it a 10-episode, straight-to-series order.
“Pennyworth” will follow Alfred who serves as a former British SAS soldier. He later joins forces with Thomas Wayne, Bruce Wayne’s father, and forms a “secret company.”
Alongside Heller, “Gotham” co-executive producer Danny Cannon will produce the prequel. “As genuine fans of these classic DC characters, as well as the incredibly talented Bruno Heller and Danny Cannon, we couldn’t be more excited to make Epix the home of this series,” Epix president Michael Wright previously said. “We can’t wait to work with Bruno and Danny — along with Peter Roth, Susan Rovner, Brett Paul and the team at Warner Horizon — on this fantastic origin story.”
Heller and Cannon added in a joint statement, “Michael and his colleagues have created the perfect venue for original storytelling, and all of us working on ‘Pennyworth’ are thrilled to be on the Epix slate.”
While the cast hasn’t been revealed yet, a slew of actors have played the titular character. Sean Pertwee portrays Batman’s butler on “Gotham”, while Jeremy Irons takes on the role in the DC Extended Universe.
Epix has yet to reveal the release date of “Pennyworth”.
