The ‘Black Panther’ actress remembers a ‘devastating’ experience from her childhood, revealing that she was sexually assaulted by a man that her mother was dating.
Angela Bassett revealed she was fondled when she was a child. The “Avengers: Endgame” actress recalled the “devastating” experience on red carpet of a fund-raising event benefiting Rape Treatment Center and Stuart House UCLA-Santa Monica Medical Center.
Bassett remembered she woke up to find a man that her mother was dating was groping her while she was asleep. “Fortunately, it wasn’t a complete assault, it was fondling, but it was devastating enough for a child who’s 12 or 13,” she opened up to The Hollywood Reporter.
“And thankfully to have a mother who could tell as soon as light broke that this happened and for her to expel him,” the 61-year-old star continued. “That she heard me, believed me, and did something about it was so empowering for me as a young teen, as a young woman.”
Now a mother of 13-year-old twin daughter Bronwyn and son Slater, the “Black Panther” star taught her children to be respectful of others. “You just want them to be aware,” she said. “They’ll be in situations one day, and when a girl says no, both to him and to her, she means no.”
